What it is
Agriculture and food systems are a major and distinct emissions source, driven by methane from livestock (see Climate Science Fundamentals), nitrous oxide from fertilizer use, and land-use change from converting natural ecosystems into farmland.
Three responses
- Regenerative agriculture — a set of farming practices (cover cropping, reduced tillage, rotational grazing) aimed at improving soil health and sequestering more carbon in soil rather than releasing it.
- Alternative proteins — plant-based and lab-grown (cultivated) meat and dairy substitutes aimed at reducing the emissions-intensive footprint of conventional livestock production.
- Food waste reduction — a less glamorous but consequential lever: a large share of food produced is never eaten, which wastes every emission that went into growing it.
Why it matters
This sector connects back to Carbon / Climate Data’s soil carbon sequestration methods and to Circular Economy / Materials’ waste-reduction framing, but stands on its own as one of the largest and most persistently difficult-to-decarbonize emissions sources, given how deeply tied it is to global food security and cultural food practices, not just technology or policy choices.
