What it is

Mobility covers the decarbonization of transportation, a large share of global emissions.

Electrifying personal vehicles

The most visible shift is the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs), which depends heavily on the battery technology covered in the Storage topic and on the charging infrastructure needed to support widespread adoption. Beyond personal vehicles, this sector also covers public transit and micromobility (bikes, scooters, and similar smaller-scale transport).

The harder problem: freight and shipping

Freight and shipping are harder to decarbonize, since batteries are currently too heavy and low-capacity for many long-haul uses. That’s pushing this sub-segment toward alternatives like hydrogen or advanced biofuels instead.

Why it matters

Mobility is one of the more consumer-visible climate sectors, but it shares deep technical roots with Storage (battery technology) and Energy / Grid (EV charging adds new, often poorly time-matched demand to the grid). Companies here range from familiar consumer-facing EV brands to much less visible infrastructure and software plays — charging networks, fleet electrification software — that are closer to the SaaS-background career path this hub is built around.
